Renowned boxer Ryan Garcia has responded to recent reports suggesting his involvement in performance-enhancing steroid use, vehemently denying the allegations. The news surfaced following his victory over Devin Haney, with the World Boxing Council (WBC) confirming “adverse findings” from tests conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) in April. ESPN obtained a letter disclosing Garcia’s positive result for ostarine, a banned substance.
Garcia, 25, took to social media to defend his integrity, asserting, “Everybody knows that I don’t cheat. Never taken a steroid, I don’t even know where to get steroids. I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat him.”
In light of these developments, Garcia has the option to request further testing of his B sample within the next 10 days to contest the findings.
When questioned about the implications for the Haney fight, the New York State Athletic Commission emphasized the importance of upholding safety, fairness, and integrity in sports. The Commission stated it is actively reviewing the matter in consultation with Vada.
Margaret Goodman, President of Vada, reaffirmed the organization’s policy of not disclosing athletes’ results publicly without express permission.
Ostarine, a non-steroidal substance used to support muscle growth, has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned substance list since 2008.
Despite his victory over Haney, Garcia’s title aspirations were thwarted after failing to make weight for the contest. The WBC mandates its fighters to participate in its ‘clean boxing program’ and conducts stringent drug testing overseen by Vada.
Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia’s promoters, announced plans to investigate the circumstances leading to the positive test, reiterating their belief in Garcia’s innocence.
In response, Haney expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty.”
Garcia’s case draws parallels to British boxer Amir Khan’s two-year ban by UK Anti-Doping for ostarine use in 2022.
