McIlroy captures first Green Jacket, becomes only sixth golfer in history to complete career Grand Slam
Rory McIlroy has officially conquered Augusta National.
With a dramatic playoff win over Justin Rose, McIlroy claimed his first Masters title on Sunday, completing golf’s rarest feat: the career Grand Slam. The 35-year-old becomes only the sixth player in history to achieve the milestone, joining legends Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen.
The win also marks McIlroy’s fifth career major title, ending a decade-long pursuit of the Green Jacket that had become one of golf’s most talked-about storylines.
“I have dreamt about this moment for as long as I can remember,” McIlroy said after slipping on the iconic Green Jacket for the first time. “There were moments I wasn’t sure it would ever happen—but I didn’t give up. I didn’t make it easy today, but I got it done.”
McIlroy finished regulation play tied with Rose after a rollercoaster round that saw him blow a four-shot lead and miss a decisive birdie putt on the 18th green. But in the playoff, the Northern Irishman delivered when it mattered most—sinking a birdie while Rose settled for par.
The moment was emotional, symbolic, and deeply satisfying for McIlroy, who opened the round with a nerve-rattling double bogey and later admitted the pressure of the occasion weighed heavily.
“That double bogey might have been the best thing to happen to me today—it grounded me,” McIlroy reflected. “On the back nine, I questioned if I’d let it slip again. But I dug deep, hit the shots when I needed to, and I’m incredibly proud.”
Before taking questions from the press, McIlroy opened with a grin and a bit of well-earned humor:
“I’d like to start this press conference with a question myself—what are we all gonna talk about next year?”
The room erupted in laughter. It was the kind of mic-drop moment only McIlroy could pull off—witty, self-aware, and long overdue.
The victory was celebrated by McIlroy’s family, including wife Erica Stoll and daughter Poppy, who stole the show earlier in the week during the par-three contest. After a period of personal turbulence, McIlroy confirmed the couple had reconciled, saying, “We’ve resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning together.”
Among those applauding McIlroy’s win was his longtime friend and TGL co-founder Tiger Woods, who shared a congratulatory message on X:
“Welcome to the club @McIlroyRory. Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special… You’re now a part of history.”
McIlroy’s Masters title solidifies his place among golf’s all-time greats, erasing years of questions and what-ifs. With five majors, a Grand Slam, and a new chapter unfolding in both his personal and professional life, Rory McIlroy is not just back—he’s immortalized.
