Hospitalized family members do not allow Trump to visit them
President Trump claimed on Twitter that his visit to El Paso to meet with victims of Saturday’s mass shooting was a success. “Incredible afternoon in El Paso, Texas. We love you, and are with you, all the way!” he tweeted Wednesday evening. However, at least two families affected by the shooting refused to meet with the President.
Ryan Mielke, a spokesman for University Medical Center in El Paso, where many of the victims were hospitalized, said the hospital respected the families’ wishes to not allow Trump to visit.
Leticia Mariscal, who was wounded in the shooting along with her father, said her family did not want Trump to visit because they believe the President is anti-Hispanic.
“The whole family said if he wants to go into the room, no. We don’t want him in the patient’s room. And we respect all of our family’s opinion,” Mariscal said. “Because of the way he talked against Mexicans, against Hispanics so we don’t want to talk to a person that are against our Mexicans.”
Trump called negative coverage of his visits “fake news,” and said he received a warm welcome in El Paso, as well as Dayton, Ohio, the site of another mass shooting last weekend.
“My time spent in Dayton and El Paso with some of the greatest people on earth. Thank you for a job well done!” Trump tweeted Wednesday, along with a video showing highlights from his visit.
