Devices running BlackBerry OS will cease function this week.
While not as popular as brands like Apple or Android, BlackBerry mobile devices, which had their period of prominence in the mid-2000s, are still utilized to this day by some die-hard fans. The company is still alive and well and releasing new devices, though some early adopters still prefer the bulkier models from yesteryear. However, if you have an older BlackBerry model, you may want to consider an upgrade, and fast, because your device is about to go dead.

Starting tomorrow, January 4, all BlackBerry devices running the old BlackBerry operating system will completely lose almost all of their functionality. This includes features like data storage, text messaging, calls, and even the ability to dial 911 for emergencies. BlackBerry first announced they would be bringing their legacy mobile services to an end back in 2020, and they recently released a statement reminding users of the incoming shutdown.

“As a reminder, the legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions, will no longer be available after January 4, 2022,” BlackBerry explained in their statement.
Modern BlackBerry devices are all powered by Android OS, so even once Blackberry OS stops working, those devices will still be fine.
