Hamtramck’s Flag Ban Sparks Controversy and Reflection
A lively debate unfolded during a recent meeting of the Hamtramck City Council in the Detroit area, resulting in a decision to prohibit the display of LGBTQ+ flags on publicly owned poles. The ban has ignited discussions about discrimination, religious beliefs, and the city’s reputation as a haven for newcomers.
During the meeting, a woman protesting the ban took a stand by kissing another woman beside her. This act of defiance encapsulated the sentiments of those opposing the ban. However, council member Nayeem Choudhury argued that the LGBTQ+ community is already represented without the need for their flag to be displayed on government property. Choudhury emphasized the council’s intention to respect the religious rights of citizens while acknowledging the clash between some members of their faith and the Pride flag.
Hamtramck, an enclave nestled within Detroit, boasts a population of 27,000, with over 40% of residents born in other countries. Many of the inhabitants trace their roots to Yemen or Bangladesh. To strike a balance, the all-Muslim council unanimously decided to display only five flags, namely the American flag, the Michigan flag, and flags representing the native countries of immigrant residents.
Mayor Amer Ghalib addressed the flag controversy during his campaign, asserting the city’s commitment to serving everyone without discrimination or favoritism. He drew a parallel between some Muslims’ opposition to the LGBTQ+ flag and conservative members of other religions who hold similar views.

Dawud Walid, director of the Michigan branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, emphasized that Hamtramck’s flag policy does not discriminate against any specific group. According to Walid, if any group were denied access while others were granted it, then there would be a legitimate cause for concern.
The decision by the Hamtramck City Council has faced criticism, particularly from Detroit City FC, a professional soccer team with a significant following in the area. The team took to Twitter to express their disappointment, stating that Pride flags convey a message of inclusivity and that the community values diversity.
Residents like Hayley Cain, who chose to move to Hamtramck due to its reputation as a diverse community, have expressed concern over the ban. Cain believes that the Pride flag symbolizes the importance of creating a space for all individuals, regardless of their position on the spectrum of human identity.
