Kylian Mbappe led Paris Saint-Germain to a resounding 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 clash.
Mbappe’s brilliance shone through just before the hour mark at the Parc des Princes, as he broke the deadlock and set PSG on course for a crucial win.
Despite a sluggish start from PSG in the first half, Mbappe’s clinical finish and Bradley Barcola’s well-taken goal in the 70th minute ensured a commanding lead for the French champions ahead of the return leg in Spain. Reflecting on the win, Mbappe expressed satisfaction, stating, “We are pleased with this initial step. There’s still work to be done, but it’s positive to head into the next leg with an advantage.”
Captain Marquinhos acknowledged PSG’s initial struggles but credited a halftime discussion for the team’s improved second-half performance. “We understand the importance of winning at home, but the job isn’t finished. We must maintain our focus and performance to secure our qualification,” Marquinhos emphasized.
Real Sociedad, appearing in their first Champions League knockout stage in two decades, faced difficulties without captain Mikel Oyarzabal and entered the match goalless in their last four games. Despite PSG’s unbeaten streak of 16 games, vulnerabilities were evident, particularly in the first half when Real Sociedad posed a threat.
Mbappe’s 31st goal of the season, assisted by Marquinhos from a corner, eased tensions for PSG. The French captain, amidst speculation linking him to Real Madrid, nearly added another goal, showcasing his relentless attacking prowess. Barcola’s goal in the 70th minute sealed the win and intensified Real Sociedad’s challenge in the upcoming fixture.
As attention shifts to the return leg on March 5, PSG remains cautiously optimistic, mindful of past setbacks in the competition. Supporters, while hopeful, understand the unpredictable nature of Champions League knockout ties and stress the importance of consistent performance.
Anticipation is high for the next encounter, with PSG aiming to overcome challenges and secure their spot in the quarter-finals.
