Recapping all the top games you may have missed over the weekend
NFL quarterbacks posted some gaudy numbers Sunday, but Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers topped all of them.
The Packers standout threw for 429 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score in a 42-24 win over the Oakland Raiders. He earned a perfect passer rating of 158.3
Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins also continued his rebound. The Vikings QB passed for 337 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-30 victory over Detroit. The Lions’ Matt Stafford passed for 364 yards and four TDs in defeat.
One more note: Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson passed for 143 yards and ran for 116 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens’ 30-16 upset victory over the Seahawks in Seattle.
In a game where defense excelled, the San Francisco 49ers improved to 6-0 for the first time since 1990 by shutting out the Washington Redskins 9-0 in sloppy, rainy conditions in Landover, Maryland.
College Football:
There was more leap-frogging in the Associated Press college football poll. Ohio State jumped up to No. 3, passing Clemson, in Sunday’s rankings. Alabama and LSU remain 1-2. After Clemson at fourth come Oklahoma and Penn State. Previously unbeaten Wisconsin fell to 13th after losing to Illinois.
Alabama QB Tua Tagavailoa had surgery on Sunday to repair a high ankle sprain and will miss the Arkansas game, which is followed by a bye week. Bama expects him back for the meeting with LSU.
World Series:
Jose Altuve’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth Saturday night gave the Houston Astros a 6-4 walk-off victory over the New York Yankees and the American League pennant. Houston won the best-of-seven series in six games and now plays the Washington Nationals in the World Series. Game 1 is Tuesday night in Houston.
NASCAR:
Finishing second was as good as winning for Chase Elliott at Kansas Speedway in the Hollywood Casino 400. Elliott collected 15 stage points while Brad Keselowski earned just five, sending Elliott into the round of eight stages of the Monster Energy Cup Series championship. Denny Hamlin won the race and had previously clinched a spot in the round of eight.
Elsewhere:
The NBA regular season opens Tuesday night with the New Orleans Pelicans playing the Toronto Raptors, the defending champs. Prized Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson is out indefinitely with a knee injury. … MLB American League umpire Eric Cooper, who worked the ALDS between the Minnesota Twins and Yankees, died at 52. MLB said he died of a blood clot. He’d had recent knee surgery.
