Trump Is Opposed To Mexican Cartels

President Trump is calling on Mexico to halt the “invasion” of immigrants across the Southern border, saying the Mexican government is perfectly capable of stopping the flow of migrants, and blaming the problem on cartels is just making excuses.

“I think Mexico will step up and do what they should have done. I don’t want to hear that Mexico is run by cartels and drug lords and coyotes,” Trump said at a press conference in the U.K. with British Prime Minister Theresa May. “I don’t want to hear about that. Mexico should step up and stop this onslaught, this invasion into our country.”

Last week, Trump announced he will impose a 5% tariff on all Mexican goods imported to the U.S. until the country stops people from crossing the border. Trump said the tariffs would increase as long as the crisis continues, and could go as high as 25 percent.

Mexico said it wants “dialogue” with the United States, and hopes to compromise before the tariffs escalate. Mexico’s foreign minister is supposed to meet with the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, tomorrow.

At a press conference, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said Mexico wasn’t going to take the bait and “fall for any provocation.”

“We are going to act with prudence, with respect for the authorities of the United States, with respect for President Donald Trump,” López Obrador said.
