Trump Refuses To Reveal Tax Refund

President Donald Trump is refusing to hand over his tax returns to Congress, calling the demand for his returns a political stunt and insisting the Democrats will “never” get them.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass, formally made the request for Trump’s tax returns on behalf of House Democrats. He gave the IRS Commissioner, Charles Rettig, until April 10 to release Trump’s tax returns. But that deadline has arrived, and Trump isn’t cooperating. His refusal to hand over the tax returns will most likely trigger a long legal battle.

William Consovoy, an attorney for Trump, sent a four-page letter to the Treasury Department asking it to delay fulfilling the Democrats’ request.

“This request is a transparent effort by one political party to harass an official from the other party because they dislike his politics and speech,” Consovoy wrote. “Chairman Neal wants the President’s tax returns and return information because his party recently gained control of the House, the President is their political opponent, and they want to use the information to damage him politically.”

This is the first time in 45 years that Congress has requested to see a sitting President’s tax returns.
