Reception to the film has been middling, but it’s still bringing in audiences.
This past weekend saw the opening of Thor: Love and Thunder, the newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film once again stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, god of thunder, as well as the return of Natalie Portman as Dr. Jane Foster, who receives the powers of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, and assumes the mantle of the god of thunder herself.

For its opening weekend, the film has brought in a respectable box office profit of $143 million domestically, which increases to around $300 million with international releases. This is more or less in line with industry expectations, and while the biggest Marvel box office of the year is still firmly held by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is a solid profit nonetheless.

Despite the profits, however, the critical reception to the film has been a bit middling. At the time of writing, the film maintains a 68% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 81% audience score. Again, this isn’t terrible, but compared to some of Marvel’s other major pictures, it’s a bit underwhelming.
“Taika Waititi seems to be still finding his footing with this franchise, and it may take him directing another film to find the right balance for these Asgardian heroes,” writes Deadline Hollywood Daily’s Valerie Complex about the film.
