A New Chapter Begins

After numerous long, heated, and emotional discussions, a bill was finally passed to lower the Confederate battle flag from outside the State House in South Carolina. The flag has been a symbol for over 50 years of southern pride and has history of resistance and racial animus.

When the flag came down crowds gathered and heavy security was present. Guarded across the decades by both Democrats and Republicans, the flag finally left its pole outside the State House only 23 days after nine black churchgoers were killed in Charleston’s town church.

The flag will be brought to the Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, and its pole will be removed from the grounds of the State House.
