Williams was beaten by Harmony Tan after a lengthy match.

Yesterday, tennis star Serena Williams took on Harmony Tan in the first round of the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. It was Williams’s first singles match in nearly a year, and she gave Tan a run for her money with a match over three hours in length and a 10-point third-set tiebreak. Sadly, despite her best efforts, Williams was ultimately defeated by Tan, though the two of them were met with a standing ovation from the crowd as they departed the court.

“Today I gave all I could do, you know, today,” Williams told reporters after the match. “Maybe tomorrow I could have gave more. Maybe a week ago I could have gave more. But today was what I could do.

“At some point, you have to be able to be OK with that. And that’s all I can do. I can’t change time or anything, so, that’s all I could do on this particular day.”

Williams has recently been beset by rumors of a potential retirement from professional tennis. When asked by reporters about her thoughts on the matter, she kept her answer noncommittal.

“That’s a question I can’t answer,” Williams said. “Like, I don’t know. I feel like, you know, I don’t know. Who knows? Who knows where I’ll pop up.”
