Sebastián Muñoz Sinks a Hole-in-One… in a Trash Can

Impressive, though not quite where the ball is supposed to go.

I know the goal of golf is to get the ball in the hole, but I don’t think you’re allowed to shoot it into just any hole. Otherwise, you could just launch it into a water trap and say “technically, it’s a hole.” Even so, sometimes, whether due to local weather conditions or a weird swing on a golfer’s part, the ball finds its way somewhere it shouldn’t have.

That’s what happened to Sebastián Muñoz on his 18th hole tee shot during the 2021 PGA Championship yesterday. By all accounts, it was a pretty normal shot, but for whatever reason, the ball went flying into stands instead of onto the fairway. Luckily, it didn’t hit anyone, but it took a moment to determine where the ball had landed. Turns out, it landed in a trash can.

When the game officials confirmed the ball was his, Muñoz asked “Do I have to get it?”

He retrieved the ball from the bin and passed it over to a (questionably) lucky fan, though this prompted one of the commentators to laugh and mention that “He’s just given her his litter.”

Muñoz received a free drop for the kerfuffle, and ended up saving par on the hole.
