The two shared a lengthy, amiable meeting.
Today, US President Joe Biden arrived in Vatican City for a meeting with Pope Francis. The two spoke in a closed door meeting for about 90 minutes, which is the longest meeting a President has had with the Pope in many years. Apparently, the meeting went on longer than initially planned, as Biden ended up behind schedule when they finally left the papal library.

Following the meeting, the two exchanged gifts and pleasantries publicy, apparently both in good spirits after their conversation. Biden gave Francis a military coin often given to leaders and prolific individuals by Presidents, calling him “the most significant warrior for peace I’ve ever met.”
“The tradition is, and I’m only kidding about this, but next time I see you, if you don’t have it, you have to buy the drinks,” Biden said, adding “I’m the only Irishman you’ve ever met who’s never had a drink.”
Francis laughed and replied, “The Irish brought whisky.”

The exact contents of their discussion have been kept confidential, but after the meeting concluded, the White House released an official statement with a summation. “Biden thanked His Holiness for his advocacy for the world’s poor and those suffering from hunger, conflict, and persecution,” the statement said. “He lauded Pope Francis’ leadership in fighting the climate crisis, as well as his advocacy to ensure the pandemic ends for everyone through vaccine sharing and an equitable global economic recovery.”
