Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Republican Senator John McCain, might be leaving her job as a co-host on “The View.”

A source close to McCain reportedly told The Daily Beast that McCain feels like a “caged animal” and says her salary, a little under a million dollars a year, is “not worth the emotional toll every week.”

McCain is criticized relentlessly on social media for her outspokenness and her impassioned outbursts, Hilary Estey McLoughlin, executive producer of “The View,” told the Daily Beast.

“What happens with Meghan is that because she’s so passionate about what she’s talking about, and she feels very strongly that she’s carrying this mantle for the conservative perspective, and what she wants to talk about is so important to her, I think that’s the part that’s the most draining for her,” McLoughlin said. ” “I think she does want to be there. I think she wants to be on the show. She realizes it’s a very good platform for her and we love having her there. I feel like she will come back.”

McCain is still grieving the death of her father, who died last August after a battle with brain cancer. To add to her emotional burden, The Daily Beast reports that anonymous sources have portrayed McCain as a “backstage villain,” and she remains cautious around her co-hosts.
