Truss has taken the reins from Boris Johnson.
After a monthlong period of no concrete leadership following the departure of former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the United Kingdom has finally appointed its new leader this week. After securing the majority vote in the Conservative Party leadership contest, Liz Truss has been appointed the new Prime Minister, only the third female Prime Minister in the country’s history.

Truss has inherited a laundry list of problems from Johnson’s tenure as the Prime Minister, including both economnic issues and an energy crisis, but in her first official statement in the position, she pledged to address both of those issues. In a Monday speech, Truss said she would “deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis – dealing with people’s energy bills but also dealing with the long term issues we have on energy supply. And I will deliver on the National Health Service.”

Truss has received the official blessing of Queen Elizabeth II after visiting her at her royal Scotland estate, Balmoral Castle. Typically, the Queen comes to Buckingham Palace for this ceremony, but at 96 years in age, her medical advisors have cautioned her to avoid unnecessary travel in the interest of her health.
