LeBron weighs in on Morey controversy
LeBron James of the L.A. Lakers claims the Houston Rockets’ general manager, Daryl Morey, “wasn’t educated” when he tweeted his support for Hong Kong protesters. Young people in Hong Kong have been protesting the Chinese government for months now, and Morey’s tweets landed the NBA in hot water with China. China pulled NBA games from Chinese TV following the tweets.
“I don’t want to get into a [verbal] feud with Daryl Morey, but I believe he wasn’t educated on the situation at hand, and he spoke,” James told reporters before a game. “And so many people could have been harmed not only financially, physically, emotionally, spiritually. So just be careful what we tweet and say and we do, even though, yes, we do have freedom of speech, but there can be a lot of negative that comes with that, too.”
James refused to elaborate on what he meant by his comments, and whether it means he supports the actions of the Chinese government.
LeBron was widely criticized for the comments, which many viewed as supporting the repressive Communist regime in China. Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican from Nebraska, accused LeBron of spouting “Communist propaganda.”
James denied that his comments were supportive of the Chinese government. He said he was only pointing out that Morey did not consider the ramifications of the tweet.
“Let me clear up the confusion. I do not believe there was any consideration for the consequences and ramifications of the tweet,” James tweeted. “I’m not discussing the substance. Others can talk About that.”
