Kim Kardashian West Visits Death Row Inmate
Kim Kardashian West visited San Quentin prison to meet with an inmate she believes is innocent. Kevin Cooper has been on death row since 1983 when he was convicted of murdering two adults and two children.
Kardashian West says she believes Cooper was framed. She’s using her fame to lobby California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, to take another look at Cooper’s case. She said new DNA testing might exonerate Cooper.
“I had an emotional meeting with Kevin Cooper yesterday at San Quentin’s death row,” Kim wrote on Twitter. “I found him to be thoughtful and honest and I believe he is innocent of the crimes for which he was convicted. I am hopeful that Kevin will be exonerated since DNA testing has now been ordered on Kevin’s case and I remain grateful to Governor Newsom for ending capital punishment in California.”
Kardashian West, who is studying to become a licensed lawyer, has taken an interest in several cases where an inmate was wrongfully convicted or sentenced to a lengthy prison term for non-violent crimes. Last year, she met with President Trump to press him to pardon Alice Johnson, a woman serving a life sentence for a drug charge, to which Johnson pleaded not guilty. Shortly after the meeting, Johnson was freed.
Kardashian West recently partnered with the 90 Days of Freedom campaign, a legal advocacy project that works to free the wrongly convicted.
