What’s the verdict?

The creator of “The Simpsons,” Matt Groening, has brought ten episodes of a new show called “Disenchantment” to Netflix. It’s the story of a Medieval princess and her entourage, a drunken, sassy, reckless bunch. The unconventional princess, Bean, voiced by Abbi Jacobson –one of Broad City’s stars and creators – is the heroine of the anti-fairytale. She hangs out with hoodlums and one of her best friends, voiced by Eric André, is a magical little demon. She wears pants, dirty boots, and kicks butt.

The animation matches that of Groening’s TV comedies, “The Simpsons” and “Futurama.” Bean, like many of his characters and many of her co-stars, have that utterly flawed but somehow likeable touch. The setting is delightfully old-timey, and the bird’s eye view of the Medieval kingdom, is, actually, enchanting.

Groening has described the series as more “emotional” than his other work. The dynamic of the show is bound to be different considering there are only ten thirty-minute episodes for audiences to flexibly indulge in at their disposal. Critics who examine the show comparatively with Groening’s other comedies have expressed Disenchantment’s deviation from, say, The Simpson’s comedic delivery.

Aside from the refreshing female lead, the show has a different rhythm with the Netflix platform. The political punchlines and witty one-liners hit a bit heavier in Princess Bean’s coming of age misadventures.
