An analysis of the Golden Globes nominations, including the competitive Best Actress category, and whether ‘La La Land’s’ nominations indicate a return of musicals is discussed. ‘La La Land’ has seven nominations, with ‘Moonlight’ close behind with six nominations.

While the musical category has been neglected in recent Hollywood history, ‘La La Land’ has put a spin on it and made it more appealing to the general public. While it has definitely put a spotlight on the musical category, it might not necessarily be ushering in a new era. ‘Moonlight’, which might be in the running for an Oscar as well, is in the running for Best Motion Picture (drama) category. ‘Lion’ and ‘Manchester by the Sea’ are both films that are competition for ‘Moonlight’.

However, there were some surprises, too. The Tom Hanks movie ‘Sully’ did not receive the nominations that might have been expected. For TV, ‘The People Versus O.J. Simpson’ received five Golden Globe nominations. ‘This is Us’ beat out ‘Game of Thrones’ for number of nominations, and was a big success for NBC.

Some streaming shows, such as ‘Mozart in the Jungle’ have also received nominations. The category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture has a lot of great nominations, including Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain and Natalie Portman. While ‘Finding Dory’ was a huge hit at the box office, it did not receive any nominations, which was quite surprising. We will all be watching on January 8.
