Think of the San Francisco Giants as a mini-dynasty.
They won three World Series titles in a short span – 2010, 2012, 2014 – behind a strong pitching staff and a manager, Bruce Bochy, who accepted the job in 2007 mostly on a gut feeling.
Bochy, who turns 64 in April, told the team on Monday morning before its spring training workout that this would be his last season. The accolades and praise haven’t stopped since.
Nor should they. Bochy won a National League pennant as manager of the San Diego Padres before collecting three titles with the Giants. Nine previous managers in Major League Baseball history won the World Series three times and every one of them has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
“He’s a lock,” said Giants president and CEO Larry Baer. “To us, it’s a no-brainer.”
Bochy may not be done with baseball. He said he’d like to stay in the game in some capacity and might manage again. With the Giants coming off a pair of losing seasons, he may sense that the time is right for the club to make a change, and a new role or position elsewhere might also be refreshing.
“Never say never,” Bochy said. “You never know what’s ahead of you. Where my head is at right now, I’m retiring as a manager here this year. It (the future) is not something I’m thinking about. So I’ll leave it at that.”
And we will leave you with a tip of the cap and a thank you.
