The 2022 Grammys are set to air on January 31, 2022 on CBS and Paramount+. The nominations have already been released, and as usual, there is no shortage of high profile artists in the running. However, in a surprise move, Canadian rapper Drake, one of the most high profile artists of the hip hop genre, has decided he’d rather opt out of this year’s Grammys.

Drake was nominated for two Grammy awards, those being Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance, but as of last night, Drake has withdrawn his nominations from both categories. While sources close to the performer claim that the decision was a mutual one made between Drake himself and his management staff, no concrete reasoning for the withdrawal has been offered by either.

Drake has had a rocky relationship with the Grammys and its committee for several years now, previously criticizing them for banning rapper The Weeknd and declining to perform on stage at the 2019 show.

“I wanna let you know we’re playing in an opinion-based sport not a factual-based sport,” he said while accepting an award at a previous show.

“This is a business where sometimes it’s up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada has to say or a fly Spanish girl from New York or anybody else,” Drake added.
