Not once, but twice
Legendary country music star Dolly Parton revealed that she was offered the Presidential Medal of Freedom but decided to turn it town. Parton received two offers to accept the Presidential Medal of Freedom during the Trump administration but turned them down citing reasons surrounding her personal life.

Parton turned down the nation’s highest civilian honor the first time because she was dedicating spending time with her husband during an illness period. Shortly after the first offer, the Trump administration extended a second offer but Parton didn’t want to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many suspect Parton rejected the honor because it came from former President Donald Trump but the country music star is known for being politically unbiased. Biden has expressed his interest in offering Parton the honor but she feels that if she accepts it now the media might portray it as a political message.

Aside from being a country music star writing over 3,000 songs over her career and winning 14 Grammy awards, Parton is known for her philanthropy work. The queen of the country has founded her literacy program, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which donated over 100 million children’s books over the last 26 years.
Parton has also donated some of her music fortune to philanthropic efforts donating $1,000 per month to several hundred families in East Tennessee after losing their homes to wildfires. Parton also donated $1 million in funding for coronavirus (COVID-19) research at Vanderbilt University that helped develop the Moderna vaccine.
Parton says that she doesn’t work in the music industry for the awards and she’s unsure if she is worthy of the honor but thinks it’s a compliment for people to think she deserves it. Do you think the country singer deserves the nation’s highest civilian honor?
