On Sunday night, April 13, President Donald Trump ignited a major online controversy after posting an AI-generated image on Truth Social that appeared to depict him as a Jesus-like figure.
The image showed Trump in white and red robes with a glowing effect, placing his hand on a sick man’s head in a pose widely interpreted as a healing scene. Patriotic elements such as American flags and eagles were also visible in the background. The post came shortly after he publicly criticized Pope Leo XIV, which only added to the reaction.
Backlash From Across the Political Spectrum
The reaction was immediate and intense.
Criticism came not only from Trump’s political opponents but also from some of his own religious conservative supporters. Several evangelical and Catholic voices described the image as offensive and blasphemous, especially given the religious symbolism and timing. Even some usually supportive conservative commentators publicly distanced themselves from the post.
The image was deleted roughly 13 hours later on Monday.
Trump’s Explanation Goes Viral
Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Monday afternoon, Trump acknowledged that he personally posted the image but insisted it was misunderstood.
His explanation quickly became the biggest part of the story:
“I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor… It’s supposed to be me as a doctor making people better, and I do make people better.”
He also added that it was connected to the Red Cross.
That explanation itself immediately went viral across social media.
Memes, Mockery, and “Doctor Trump” Trends
Within hours, clips of his remarks spread across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X.
Memes quickly reframed the incident around the phrase “I thought it was me as a doctor”, with users mocking the explanation and creating edits, reaction videos, and parody images.
A large part of the online reaction focused less on the original image and more on the explanation itself, which many people found difficult to reconcile with the clearly religious visual styling.
Why This Became Such a Big Story
This story sits at the intersection of politics, religion, AI imagery, and internet culture.
The original image was already highly provocative because of its symbolism. The follow-up explanation then turned it into a viral social media moment, fueling even more discussion and satire.
Given the existing tensions around Trump’s comments toward Pope Leo XIV, the timing made the reaction even more intense.
Final Thoughts
What began as a single AI-generated post quickly turned into one of the most talked-about political internet moments of the week.
At this point, the phrase “I thought it was me as a doctor” has arguably become even more viral than the image itself.
