Lavish red-carpet welcome meets rising diplomatic tension as Trump courts peace and stirs controversy in the Gulf
Former President Donald Trump touched down in Qatar Wednesday to a lavish welcome fit for royalty—even as controversy swirled around a luxury aircraft gifted by the Gulf nation and expectations mounted over his potential to help broker a Gaza ceasefire.
Arriving in classic Trump fashion—under fighter jet escort and greeted by camels, swordsmen, and red Tesla Cybertrucks—the president launched the second leg of his four-day Middle East tour with both flair and fire.
“It’s absolutely stunning,” Trump said admiring the Amiri Diwan, Qatar’s gleaming white marble government palace. “Perfect marble. This is what they call perfecto. As a builder, I appreciate that.”
The state visit kicked off with pageantry and personal praise, but behind the grandeur, tensions brewed. Chief among them: the Qatar royal family’s gift of a $400 million Boeing 747, a fully kitted-out “flying palace” Trump hopes will temporarily serve as Air Force One while the delayed U.S. replacement jets remain grounded.

A Gift Wrapped in Controversy
The aircraft—equipped with gold-plated fixtures, private suites, and what insiders describe as “next-level” tech—has drawn fire from both sides of the aisle in Washington. Critics argue the gift may violate the Constitution’s emoluments clause and poses a security risk.
Trump hit back hard.

“It’s a gift to the country, not to me,” he wrote on Truth Social. “We’re saving taxpayers hundreds of millions. Only a fool would turn this down. It’s called smart negotiating.”
Still, the move raised eyebrows. Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, announced a hold on Justice Department nominees in protest, demanding clarity on the administration’s decision. Trump’s response? Colorful, as always.
“Schumer’s gone off the rails,” Trump told reporters. “I don’t know what happened to him.”
Talks, Tensions, and Tentative Hope
While the jet may dominate headlines, Trump’s team insists his real focus is peace—specifically, a ceasefire in Gaza. Behind closed doors in Doha, U.S. envoys met with Israeli and Palestinian officials to jumpstart stalled negotiations.
Trump is walking a diplomatic tightrope. His decision not to visit Israel during this trip is being viewed by some as a snub to Prime Minister Netanyahu, especially following moves like reopening talks with Iran and hinting at normalized relations with Syria.
Still, Trump maintains his approach strengthens ties across the Middle East—and ultimately benefits Israel.
“You build trust,” he said. “You build peace.”
That peace remains elusive. As Trump arrived in Doha, Israel intensified its campaign in Gaza, reportedly killing over 50 Palestinians in a single day. Meanwhile, Hamas appeared to signal a thaw by releasing Edan Alexander, the last known U.S.-Israeli hostage held in Gaza.
From Soccer to Skyscrapers: Trump’s Growing Qatari Ties
Also flying into Doha with Trump was FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The two are expected to participate in a symbolic World Cup handoff ceremony, with Qatar passing the hosting baton to the U.S. for 2026.
But it’s not just soccer that binds Trump to Qatar. His business empire recently announced a sprawling golf and real estate venture in the country, inked with a Qatari government-backed developer.
Next Stop: Abu Dhabi
After Qatar, Trump heads to Abu Dhabi on Thursday to meet with UAE leaders before wrapping up his Middle East tour and flying back to Washington Friday.
Whether this trip will be remembered more for a high-profile aircraft handoff or meaningful steps toward Middle East peace remains to be seen. But in true Trump fashion, it’s already making waves.
