In a significant shake-up at Starbucks, Laxman Narasimhan has stepped down from his role as CEO and board member after just over a year at the helm. Effective September 9, Brian Niccol, the current CEO of Chipotle, will step into the role of chairman and CEO at Starbucks.
Niccol, who has been leading Chipotle since 2018, is credited with driving remarkable growth and innovation at the Mexican fast-food chain. Under his leadership, Chipotle’s revenue soared nearly 800%, and the company’s stock has appreciated more than 800%. Starbucks believes Niccol’s expertise and track record make him an ideal candidate to lead the coffee giant through its current challenges.
Mellody Hobson, Starbucks’ new lead independent director, praised Niccol for his ability to set “new standards in the industry” and drive significant growth. “Brian is a culture carrier who brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of driving innovation and growth,” Hobson stated. The news of Niccol’s appointment resulted in Starbucks’ stock surging nearly 19% at market open, while Chipotle’s shares dipped by 9%.
Narasimhan’s departure comes as Starbucks faces ongoing difficulties, including a 3% decline in global sales at stores open at least a year, and a 2% drop in North America. The company has struggled with consumer fatigue over high prices and has faced criticisms for a lack of innovation and changes in its business model.
Narasimhan, who joined Starbucks in March 2023, is leaving as the company deals with declining sales, pressure from activist investors like Elliott Investment Management, and competition from low-cost rivals like Luckin Coffee. His tenure saw the company’s stock slide and faced criticism for failing to address issues such as store experience and menu innovation effectively.
Brian Niccol, known for his turnaround of Chipotle following an E. coli outbreak and for expanding the menu and digital offerings, will bring his extensive experience to Starbucks. Prior to his role at Chipotle, Niccol served as CEO of Taco Bell and held executive positions at Pizza Hut.
“It’s hard to leave such a great company and all of the talented people I’ve had the pleasure to work with,” Niccol said, referring to his departure from Chipotle. The chain’s COO, Scott Boatwright, will serve as interim CEO until a permanent replacement is found.
Analysts expect Niccol to focus on new products and marketing campaigns as he tackles Starbucks’ challenges. R.J. Hottovy of Placer.ai highlighted Niccol’s successful track record in driving visits and innovation in the fast-food sector, suggesting similar strategies could benefit Starbucks.
The leadership change comes amid broader dissatisfaction with Narasimhan’s approach and recent comments from former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, who criticized Narasimhan’s handling of the company’s US operations. Schultz expressed support for Niccol, emphasizing his respect and confidence in the new CEO’s capabilities.
