At the second Democratic debate in Detroit Tuesday night, moderate Democrats attacked progressive candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Warren and Sanders are both considered top-tier candidates and are in the top three in the polls, but moderate Democrats, like John Delaney, accused them of embracing “fairy-tale economics.”
In response to Delaney’s accusation, Warren uttered what many are calling “the line of the night.”
“I don’t understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States to talk about what we really can’t do and shouldn’t fight for,” Warren said.
“We beat [Republicans] by being the party of big structural change,” Warren said. “We can’t choose a candidate we don’t believe in just because we’re too scared to do anything else. And we can’t ask other people to vote for a candidate we don’t believe in. Democrats win when we figure out what is right and we get out there and fight for it.”
Warren’s response to Delaney was considered so devastating that one jokester went on Delaney’s Wikipedia page and changed his biography. The biography now correctly lists Delaney’s birth date as April 16, 1963, but jokingly states Delaney “died” on July 30th, 2019, in the debate against Warren.
Delaney isn’t really dead, of course–but after sparring with Warren, his presidential campaign might be.
