Mexico May Take Legal Action Against US Over El Paso Shooting
Mexico might sue the United States in the wake of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, that killed twenty people and injured dozens of others. The rampage was allegedly the work of a white supremacist, Patrick Crusius, who posted anti-immigrant manifestos on the Internet forum 8chan.
Seven people killed in Saturday’s shooting at a Wal-Mart in the Cielo Vista shopping center were Mexican citizens.
Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s foreign minister, called the shooting “an act of barbarism” and “a terrorist attack against innocent Mexicans.”
“The president has instructed me to ensure that Mexico’s indignation translates into efficient, prompt, expeditious and forceful legal actions for Mexico to take a role and demand that conditions are established that protect Mexicans in the United States,” Ebrard said.
Ebrard said he would visit El Paso to meet with victims and their families.
Crusius drove nine hours from Dallas to El Paso to carry out the attack. El Paso is more than 80 percent Hispanic and sits across the U.S. border from Juarez, a large Mexican city. Just hours before the shooting, Crusius posted a manifesto, titled “An Inconvenient Truth,” that said Latinos were “invading” Texas.
“This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas,” Crusius wrote. “If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can be more sustainable.”
