In a twist worthy of a Hollywood script, Tom Cruise has reportedly turned down President Donald Trump’s offer of a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award—citing nothing more dramatic than a full calendar.
According to The Washington Post, the Mission: Impossible star, now 63, was personally selected by President Trump for the honor, but “scheduling conflicts” kept Cruise from accepting. While Cruise is famously private about politics, the actor has long channeled his public platform toward supporting the U.S. military, veterans, and his Church of Scientology faith.
Unnamed Kennedy Center staff told the outlet that Trump was “very involved” in curating this year’s honorees. With Cruise out of the running, the president announced an eclectic lineup himself: action legend Sylvester Stallone, rock icons KISS, Broadway great Michael Crawford, disco queen Gloria Gaynor, and country superstar George Strait.
Breaking tradition, the official announcement didn’t come from the Kennedy Center but from Trump directly, inside the Hall of Nations. “Look at the Academy Awards. It gets lousy ratings. Now it’s all woke,” Trump remarked during the reveal, suggesting Americans wanted something different.

This year’s awards also mark a departure from custom by excluding honorees from dance, jazz, or classical music. Trump, who took over as chairman of the Kennedy Center during his second term and reshaped its board, praised Stallone as “one of the best actors of his generation,” citing Rocky and Rambo as cultural milestones. He described Crawford as “an international sensation,” and lauded Gaynor’s I Will Survive as “one of those few songs that just gets better every time you hear it.”
In a moment of levity, Trump joked about being a future recipient himself. “Next year we’ll honor Trump, okay?” he said with a grin.
As for Cruise, the actor hasn’t commented publicly—but given his history of avoiding political spotlight, it seems his latest mission is to keep his focus firmly on film sets rather than political stages.
