September is already delivering plenty for video game fans.
A major Steam leak has apparently revealed information connected to dozens of upcoming games, Nintendo has completed two major Direct presentations, and critics have started publishing their verdicts on Insomniac Games’ highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine.
Together, the developments have made the beginning of September unusually eventful for the gaming industry.
Steam Accidentally Reveals Upcoming Games
The biggest surprise wasn’t an official announcement at all.
Information connected to more than 70 upcoming and potentially unannounced games appeared through Steam achievement tracking services after achievements that were supposed to remain private became accessible through Steam’s API.
Exophase, a website that tracks achievements across gaming platforms, picked up the information.
Its owner suggested that achievements normally hidden from the public had temporarily become accessible through Valve’s system.
The information was later removed, but by then screenshots and details had already spread online.
Some Very Big Names Appeared
The leak included achievement information associated with major upcoming games including Persona 6, Kingdom Hearts IV, Fable and Silent Hill: Townfall.
More surprising were references to projects that haven’t been formally announced.
Reports pointed to apparent projects connected with franchises including Dune, Twin Peaks, Shrek, Sonic and Sea of Thieves.
Not everything appearing in the leak should automatically be treated as confirmation.
One supposed Balatro-related project, for example, was quickly denied by the game’s creator. Other entries could involve placeholders, cancelled projects, internal experiments or information that changes before release.
Still, the sheer scale of the leak has made it difficult to ignore.
Spoilers Are the Bigger Problem
For publishers, the issue isn’t only that game names appeared early.
Achievement lists can reveal much more.
They can expose characters, locations, story developments, gameplay mechanics and major moments that developers intended players to discover themselves.
Kingdom Hearts IV appears to be particularly affected, with reported achievements potentially revealing previously unannounced Disney worlds.
Players hoping to avoid spoilers may therefore want to be careful when browsing gaming discussions and social media over the next few days.
Nintendo Celebrates Zelda on September 8
While Steam’s surprise came accidentally, Nintendo had its own announcements carefully planned.
The company began with a special Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on September 8.
One of the biggest announcements was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, which is scheduled for November 5.
Nintendo also revealed a special 40th Anniversary Edition Nintendo Switch 2 system alongside themed accessories and other celebrations for the franchise.
For longtime Zelda fans, the presentation was designed as much around nostalgia as what’s coming next.
A Second Nintendo Direct Followed
Nintendo wasn’t finished.
On September 9, the company held a traditional Nintendo Direct focused more broadly on upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 software.
The roughly 45-minute presentation included announcements and updates for the company’s late-2026 lineup, with new Kirby and Metroid projects among the notable reveals.
Holding the two presentations on consecutive days gave Nintendo plenty of room to celebrate Zelda without allowing the anniversary to completely dominate its wider software plans.
Wolverine Reviews Arrive Before Launch
Another major gaming event this week is the arrival of reviews for Marvel’s Wolverine.
Insomniac Games’ new PlayStation 5 title launches September 15 and takes a noticeably different approach from the studio’s Spider-Man games.
Wolverine is darker, more violent and more tightly structured.
Combat focuses heavily on aggressive close-range attacks, claws, rage abilities and the brutal fighting style naturally associated with Logan.
Some early reviews have praised the game’s visual presentation, interpretation of Wolverine and intense combat.
Others have been less enthusiastic about how that combat holds up over the entire experience, describing encounters as increasingly repetitive.
Logan Gets a More Focused Adventure
One noticeable difference is the game’s structure.
Rather than giving players another enormous superhero open world, Insomniac has created a more linear, cinematic adventure.
The story takes Logan across different locations while exploring his relationships, past trauma and place within the wider mutant world.
That narrower approach may actually appeal to players experiencing open-world fatigue.
Early reviews suggest the main adventure takes roughly 13 hours, making it a comparatively focused modern AAA release.
September’s Gaming Calendar Is Heating Up
The strange thing about this week is how differently its biggest stories arrived.
Valve apparently revealed information nobody was supposed to see.
Nintendo carefully controlled two days of announcements.
Insomniac opened one of its biggest games to critics ahead of release.
Yet all three stories point toward the same thing: the final months of 2026 are becoming increasingly crowded.
For players, that’s exciting.
For publishers hoping to keep their next big reveal secret, however, the massive Steam achievement leak is an uncomfortable reminder that sometimes the biggest gaming announcement happens before anyone is ready to make it.
