YouTube TV is now on Fire. Er, not like that.
It’s no secret that Amazon and Google have hated each others’ guts for a long time. It’s for this reason that Amazon’s line of Fire streaming devices didn’t have YouTube TV functionality despite them being around for two years. Now that we live in a era of (apparent) peace between tech companies, however, Amazon has finally decided to extend an olive branch.
Amazon announced yesterday that YouTube TV functionality is now available on all currently supported Fire streaming devices, and will be a regular feature in all new Fire devices going forward. To be more specific, the following seven Fire devices will support YouTube TV:
- Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen)
- Fire TV Stick 4K
- All-new Fire TV Cube
- All Toshiba, Insignia, Element, and Westinghouse Fire TV Edition smart TVs
- Fire TV Cube (1st Gen)
- Fire TV (2nd Gen)
- Fire TV (3rd Gen — Pendant Design)
Amazon did stress, however, that the 1st generation Fire TV and TV Stick will not support this new update. If you’re still using those models, then you’re simply out of luck.
There are already plenty of streaming options on Fire devices, but YouTube TV has received some praise for its 70 live channels, unlimited cloud storage, and account sharing. It does cost a somewhat hefty $49.99 a month, though, so I guess you’ll have to decide how much those channels are worth to you.
