I try not to indulge in viral videos too much. Not because I think I’m too good for them. On the contrary, I could spend an entire day just watching videos of dumb teenagers sticking firecrackers in hornets’ nests. But when you fall down the viral video hole, you’re entering a world not of sight or sound, but of mind. Yes, that’s right, I’m likening a viral video binge to being in The Twilight Zone.

You know I’m not wrong. When you start following the polka dot-brick road of a viral crawl, you find yourself in the weird part of YouTube. One minute you’re watching a cute cat video, the next you find yourself surrounded by creepy CG animation, harlequin babies, and bad Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction. It just happens, like a weird psychological blind spot. If I were to hazard a guess, we scroll through related videos based on what seems most interesting, and the things that look most interesting are often the strangest. When you start getting incrementally stranger with each click, it’s only a matter of time before you transcend time and space.

So yeah, consider that a friendly warning against viral binge-watching. Not only am I sure you have something better you could be watching, but some things are not meant to be beheld by human eyes. It’s like the Ark of the Covenant, but instead of your face melting off, you just lay awake at night wondering how it happened.
