Russia Update
Special counsel Robert Mueller and key congressional committees are tightening their focus on some of President Donald Trump’s family members and campaign associates as probes into Russia’s interference with the 2016 election enter a new and more aggressive phase.
As congress returns to Washington, an acceleration of witness testimonies, subpoenas and interviews are expected from special counselor Robert Mueller’s investigation, as well as the three congressional committees that are also conducting their own investigations.
In addition to gathering information, magnifying conflicts is also a focus during these investigations. They are trying to get people to play against each other in order to get someone to “break” and reveal information about other people. Additionally, there is some confusion between legal teams for each committee, which is a result of so many committees talking to all of the different people who are involved.
The former FBI director James Comey might come back to Capitol Hill to testify. It will have to be determined whether the President was obstructing the investigation. The goal of the investigations is to determine whether Moscow had anything to do with President Trump’s 2016 election. The homes, financial information and Facebook accounts of people on some of Trump’s campaign workers are also being investigated in order to determine more accurately how the case will proceed.
In order to have access to someone’s Facebook account, the amount of incriminating information would have to be justifiable. The Facebook warrant “means that Mueller has concluded that specific foreign individuals committed a crime by making a ‘contribution’ in connection with an election.”
