Getting Ready For The Weekend Of Sports

Set the alarm. This won’t be easy or pretty.

The British Open, on the baked, brown course of Carnoustie in Scotland, takes over your TV screen on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. ET on NBC. That will be the third round of the 147th B.O. By the time you’ve fixed your eyeballs on this blog on Friday, we should know who made the cut and you can adjust your viewing to tee times of players you may want to see.

Rinse and repeat, folks. Sunday morning brings the final round, same time and same network. Oh, we’re going to be bleary-eyed. We may not even make it to the recliner to deposit our heiner if we can watch in bed.

For greener grass, grab yourself some chair on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. for the opening of horse racing at Saratoga in upstate New York. The picturesque track and cooler summer air are strong attractions. Visit vicariously on FS1.

We’ll keep heading north (though we’ll have to make a sharp left) to get to Calgary to see the 4-0 Stampeders take on the 1-3 Montreal Alouettes in Canadian Football League play. Montreal’s coach is Mike Sherman, who coached the Green Bay Packers. Rest assured he has no Jean-Claude Pierre LeFavre at quarterback. ESPN2 shows this at 9 p.m. on Friday night.

The guys who go round and round in bumper to bumper traffic are in New Hampshire on Sunday for NASCAR’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301. NBC SN does the honors at 2 p.m.

ESPN’s Sunday nighter is a bit parochial – the New York Mets at New York Yankees. The Mets are having their problems while the Yankees are still chasing the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. This one’s at 8 p.m.

Kinda makes you miss the World Cup, doesn’t it?
