A Sports Filled Weekend It Was
Andy Murray beat Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) Sunday to win the Wimbledon’s men’s championship for the second time.
Oddly, it was the first time in a finals appearance in a major that Murray faced an opponent other than Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer. Raonic had eliminated Federer.
On Saturday, Serena Williams defeated Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 for her seventh Wimbledon singles title and a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam title. She teamed with sister Venus Williams to win ladies doubles as well.
Soccer
Portugal defeated France 1-0 in extra time in the final of the Euro 2016 championship. This was supposed to be the last best shot for Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo to win a major European title, but he suffered a knee injury in the ninth minute and had to be subbed out. Eder’s goal in the 109th minute was the decisive (and only) score. … In a friendly on Saturday night, the U.S. Women’s National team defeated South Africa 1-0. Goalkeeper Hope Solo recorded her 100th shutout in international competition.
Auto Racing
Josef Newgarden led for a record 282 of the 300 laps in an IndyCar race Sunday at Newton, Iowa. It was his first win of the season. … Brad Keselowski won the Quaker State 400 on Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway, finishing with barely any fuel left in the tank. Carl Edwards was second. Qualifying had been washed out on Friday by a storm.
Golf
Brittany Lang picked up her first career major at the U.S. Women’s Open when Anna Nordqvist touched the sand with her club in a bunker for a two-stroke penalty in the three-hole aggregate playoff on Sunday.

Major League Baseball goes on a short holiday with the All-Star Game upcoming in San Diego on Tuesday. The Home Run Derby takes place on Monday night. … New York Mets ace Matt Harvey will have season-ending surgery on his pitching arm in the next week or so. The procedure will relieve pressure on nerve from his neck and shoulder muscles that is causing numbness and loss strength in his shoulder and arm. … Madison Bumgarner took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and struck out 14 as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0.
