Upsets Galore
Well, bust my brackets.
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of hiding after UMBC’s stunning upset of overall No. 1 seed Virginia in the NCAA basketball tournament, Florida State took out another No. 1 in Xavier.
The greater upset, of course, was UMBC. No No. 16 seed had ever beaten a No. 1 in 135 tries until Friday night. The Retrievers, however, had a short-lived moment in the sun, as they fell Sunday evening to Kansas State. The Seminoles finished with an 18-4 run against the Musketeers for a 75-70 win and a berth in the Sweet 16, where you also won’t see upset victims North Carolina and Michigan State.
UNC got crushed by Texas A&M and the Spartans fell 55-53 to Syracuse, the last team admitted to the tournament. Cincinnati, a No. 2 seed, lost to Nevada and Auburn, a No. 4, bowed to Clemson.
NASCAR: Martin Truex Jr., the Monster Energy Cup Series defending champion, got his first win of the new season Sunday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. It was a strong performance, as he started from the pole and won the first two stages. He led 125 of 200 laps and beat runner-up Kyle Larson to the finish line by a sizeable 11.685 seconds. Kyle Busch took third place.
GOLF: Rory McIroy birdied five of the last six holes to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Tiger Woods closed to within one shot of the lead before an errant drive on the 16th hole led to a bogey that put him out of contention. Woods tied for fifth. Bryson DeChambeau was second.
