Plus World Cup, Golf, And Nascar

Seven is a very popular choice as a lucky number, especially at the craps table in Las Vegas. And seven was a lucky number in baseball on Sunday.

Let’s start with the Los Angeles Dodgers. They hit seven solo home runs to beat the New York Mets 8-7.

Next? Boston Red Sox lefty Chris Sale pitched seven shutout innings and struck out 13 (the unlucky number) in a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

And? Oh, this one is good. The Cincinnati Reds scored seven runs in the seventh inning to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-6 and win (you guessed it) their seventh straight game.

WORLD CUP: There were seven goals scored in England’s victory over Panama, and England got six of them, five in the first half. Sunday’s other matches included a 2-2 draw between Japan and Senegal and a 3-0 win by Colombia over Poland that eliminated the latter from moving into the round of 16. On Saturday, Mexico beat South Korea 2-1 to virtually ensure it moves on and Germany, with a goal in stoppage time, topped Sweden 2-1.

GOLF: Bubba Watson won his third Travelers championship on Sunday in Cromwell, Connecticut, overcoming a six-stroke deficit to collect his third PGA Tour victory of the season. Watson finished with a 17-under 263. Four players tied for second, including Paul Casey, who led after 54 holes.

NASCAR: Martin Truex Jr. won the NASCAR Cup Series race in Sonoma on Sunday, holding off Kevin Harvick for his second win in three weeks and his third victory of the season. … In Formula One, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the French Grand Prix from the pole position to recapture the series lead.
