Catching up on the weekend games and matchups
Justin Tucker delivered a 53-yard field goal as time expired and the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 at home on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Both teams now share the same record – 10-2. The Ravens have won eight in a row. They’re also now the No. 1 seed for the AFC playoffs following the Houston Texans’ 28-22 over the former leader, the New England Patriots.
On the other end of the spectrum, the woe-begone Cincinnati Bengals notched their first victory of the season, beating the New York Jets 22-6. The Bengals (1-11) still would pick first in the 2020 NFL draft. The Jets are 4-8. And the Los Angeles Chargers committed a pass interference penalty on the game’s penultimate play and Brandon McManus kicked a 53-yard field goal for a 23-20 win by the Denver Broncos. Both teams are 4-8.
College football:
No. 1 Ohio State will surely remain there in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night after destroying No. 13 Michigan 56-27. Ohio State will play Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game. Virginia broke a 15-game losing streak to cross-state rival No. 24 Virginia Tech, beating the Hokies 39-30. No. 15 Auburn put an end to No. 5 Alabama’s playoff hopes with a thrilling 48-45 victory.
Missouri fired coach Barry Odom after four seasons in which he went 25-25, including this year’s 6-6. South Florida fired third-year coach Charlie Strong after a 4-8 season. Likewise at Ole Miss (4-8), which dismissed Matt Luke after three seasons and a combined 15-21 mark.
Greg Schiano will be returning to Rutgers for a second stint as head coach. … Former Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor is recovering from stab wounds after an incident in Pittsburgh.
College basketball:
No. 5 Maryland squashed Marquette 84-63 on Sunday to win the Orlando Invitational. … Duke freshman Cassius Stanley (left leg) will be out indefinitely.
NBA:
The Dallas Mavericks snapped the Los Angeles Lakers’ 10-game winning streak, beating them 114-100. … James Harden scored 60 points in Saturday night’s 158-111 win over the befuddled Atlanta Hawks.
