Weekend Sports Recap
Chez Reavie, who hadn’t won on the PGA Tour in 11 years, put an end to that lengthy drought on Sunday at The Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Reavie closed with a 1-under 69 to secure a 4-shot victory over Keegan Bradley and Zack Sucher. Reavie, 37, last won in 2008 at the Canadian Open and had finished third last week in the U.S. Open.
In the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Chaska, Minnesota, 22-year-old Hannah Green birdied the 16th hole and held on for a 1-stroke victory over defending champion Sung Hyun Park. She’s in her second year on the LPGA Tour and her first victory came in this major at Hazeltine. She’s the first wire-to-wire winner of this tournament since Yani Tseng in 2011.
Baseball:
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Sunday, winning for an unprecedented third time on a walk-off home run by a rookie. Will Smith, who was brought up from Triple-A earlier in the day, pinch-hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning, following in the weekend footsteps of Matt Beaty and Alex Verdugo.
The Houston Astros ended a seven-game losing streak on Sunday by beating the New York Yankees 9-4. The Yankees had won eight in a row. The Astros homered four times, with Tyler White hitting a grand slam.
Kevin Newman’s walk-off homer in the 11th inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to an 11-10 victory over the San Diego Padres. The College World Series, matching Vanderbilt and Michigan, begins Monday in Omaha, Nebraska.
Auto Racing:
Martin Truex Jr. collected his fourth victory of the season, winning NASCAR’s road event at Sonoma, California. Alexander Rossi led all but one lap in winning the IndyCar Road America race in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Lewis Hamilton won the F1 French Grand Prix, picking up his sixth victory of the season.
