A Sports Filled Weekend It Was

One game won’t define these programs under their new head coaches, but the state of Texas has a couple of college football hangovers.

New Texas coach Tom Herman, who had spectacular success in two years at the University of Houston, saw his Longhorns crumble 51-41 at home against Maryland, which continued to beat on the Horns even after the loss of quarterback Tyrell Pigrom to a leg injury.

Worse still was Baylor’s 48-45 loss in Waco to Liberty. New coach Matt Rhule’s Bears allowed 31 points in the second half to a team playing its first game at the FBS level.

The comeback of the weekend belonged to UCLA, which came from 34 points down in the third quarter to beat Texas A&M. Bruins junior quarterback Josh Rosen threw for 491 yards and four touchdowns, the last one off a fake spike play. The Bruins scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions.

BASEBALL: The New York Yankees used four home runs to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-2 on Sunday, taking three of the four-games in the series and closing within 3 ½ of the American League East leaders… Cody Bellinger set the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rookie record when he hit his 36th home run for the slumping club, which has lost three in a row and eight of 10.
