Facebook Will Tell You…
As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg gets grilled in front of congress today, it seems the world is eager to hear what exactly went wrong with the biggest data breach Facebook has ever seen. Don’t worry, if your data was misused during the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook will now tell you. All you have to do is head over to the Facebook Help Center page, and there is now an entire page dedicated to the scandal.
What you will see on this Cambridge Analytica page is essentially if you or any of your friends ever logged into “This Is Your Digital Life.” This is the quiz app that was developed and used by Cambridge Analytica to profile and potentially manipulate many U.S. voters. But what about those people who do not know to go to this page? Facebook has that covered. The site is sending out notifications that will appear at the top of your news feed so the next time you log-in, you will see the information.
So, what does the future look like? How do we prevent such a breach in the future? Zuckerberg has promised to audit every app that uses large amounts of data on the platform, and has already gone ahead and suspended two companies that were noticed to be using similar tactics. But, there is much more that needs to be done yet. Perhaps after today’s sit-down with Congress, Zuckerberg and lawmakers alike can begin to set something much more secure in motion.
