Highway Becomes A Landing Strip
Drivers on a highway in Southern California were left bemused over the weekend when a section of the road suddenly became more reminiscent of a runway that a highway.
A small plane that was being piloted by a learner was forced to land the aircraft as soon as possible after engine trouble was effecting how the plane was working. When making the emergency landing, the plane had to try and avoid cars that were travelling in the opposite direction to the way that the plane was trying to land.
According to the New York Post, the plane made the landing in the westbound lanes of interstate 8 in El Cajon. Authorities also added that the single-engine piper was carrying a 25 year old pilot and a 36 year old student.
The video footage is unbelievable, you can see the aircraft- which is being driven by the instructor- weaving in and out of the incoming traffic and driving over two lanes of the highway. Once the aircraft was safe the pilot and the student navigated the plane to the side of the highway to avoid blocking the traffic.
According to local news outlets, the plane was meant to land at a nearby airport but suddenly power was lost. The California Highway Patrol Officer, Travis Garrow said: “They knew they weren’t going to make it to the airport. So the next course of action was to try and put it down on the interstate. The pilot found a break in the traffic and luckily landed without running into any cars.”
A remarkable effort by the pilot and luckily for everyone involved there was no incidents.
