New Limitation Added With Pending Immigration Cases

President Trump wants to restrict green cards for people who are on welfare or might need it in the future, according to new regulations announced Monday. The new rules state that applicants for legal residency in the United States can be declined on the basis of low incomes or welfare dependency.

“We certainly expect people of any income to be able to stand on their own two feet, so if people are not able to be self-sufficient than this negative factor is going to bear very heavily against them in a decision about whether they’ll be able to become a legal permanent resident,” said Ken Cuccinelli, acting US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director.

On Monday, Trump retweeted a tweet from Team Trump, which described the new policy.

“President @realDonaldTrump is ensuring that non-citizens do not abuse American’s public benefits,” Team Trump wrote. “The Public Charge Rule will protect public resources, encourage self-sufficiency, preserve the social safety net…This will protect U.S. taxpayers and uphold the rule of law!”

Some Democrats in Congress, such as Rep. Judy Chu, D-California, vowed to fight the bill. Rep. Chu said the new green card policy was “racist” and discriminates against immigrants from poor countries in the third world, in favor of wealthier immigrants from Europe and other developed parts of the world.
