Tesla’s newest model is gaining popularity quickly
Tesla claims it has received hundreds of thousands of pre-orders for its Cybertruck, which is still legally unfit to drive on the road. Each customer pre-ordering a vehicle had to pay a non-refundable $100 deposit, meaning that Tesla has already made $20 million on the Cybertruck.
The Cybertruck’s launch got off to an awkward start when Tesla’s founder, Elon Musk, asked an employee to throw a rock at its window during a live demonstration. Musk had claimed the vehicle’s windows were unbreakable, but the rock indeed shattered the glass.
“Franz throws steel ball at Cybertruck window right before launch. Guess we have some improvements to make before production haha,” Musk tweeted, along with a video of the demonstration.
Musk says production of the Cybertruck will begin in 2021. However, car experts say the vehicle may not be “street legal” by then.
“Experts say the pickup, as of today, is more concept than production car, and itβs not street legal. The vehicle lacks side mirrors β though the government may eventually approve rear-looking cameras instead of mirrors β windshield wipers and a front bumper,” Market Watch reported. “And its single light bar in the front and back would not pass safety standards. There did not appear to be any turn signals or a third brake light. The tires also appear to protrude from their wheel wells, which is illegal.”
But that hasn’t stopped eager customers from submitting their $100 deposit. As of Sunday night, Tesla had received 200,000 pre-orders, Musk tweeted.
