Cries for Sexism

During the U.S. Open in New York, French tennis player Alize Cornet received a violation for fixing her shirt while she was still on the court. During the match, players were allowed a ten-minute break to cool down. When she returned to the court, she realized that her shirt was on backwards and took it off to fix it. Keep in mind, she had a sports bra on underneath.

Upon seeing her changing on the court, the umpire gave her an unsportsmanlike code violation. Supposedly women are only allowed to remove their shirts while they are off the court, but male tennis players can do it frequently since the rules don’t apply to them.

The U.S Open is facing allegations of sexism on the court because of this incident. The code violation that Cornet received caused an uproar on social media. A lot of people brought up the double standards and how she should not have gotten penalized for doing something that male tennis players do all the time. If you recall back in 2015, Rafael Nadal changed his shorts while he was still on the court.

The clothing changing policy was clarified: all players can change while sitting in the player chair. Going forward, the U.S. Open says they will not be giving out any more code violations. Unfortunately, Cornet did lose the match that day.
