Swift reveals she was obsessed about her weight in the past

Taylor Swift turns 30 this month. In an interview with Vogue, she said one of the best things about reaching this milestone birthday is being able to recognize “toxic messages” women receive about their bodies.

“One thing going into my 30s that I’m really stoked about is like I now can really recognize and diagnose, like, toxic messages being sent to me by society, by culture about, like, my body,” Swift told the magazine. “I’m a woman. I’m not a coat hanger…I need to feel healthy in my life and I need to take pleasure in food and I need to not use my body as like an exercise of control when I feel out of control in my life.”

Swift said that during her teens and twenties, she often obsessed about her weight, using dieting and compulsive exercise as an “exercise of control.” Now that she’s entering her third decade, she’s learned to embrace her body.

“I learned to stop hating every ounce of fat on my body. I worked hard to retrain my brain that a little extra weight means curves, shinier hair, and more energy,” she said. “I think a lot of us push the boundaries of dieting, but taking it too far can be really dangerous. There is no quick fix. I work on accepting my body every day.”
