How The Pride Flag Came To Be

The rainbow flag is the symbol of the LGBTQ community, and being pride month, it is flying high. But how did the colorful flag come to be? The design was created by activist Gilbert Baker for the gay freedom day parade in 1978. It is said that he got his inspiration for the flag from the song ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ by Judy Garland. The song quickly caught fire and was a symbol of gay liberation in the 60’s after the pride community put on several demonstrations including the ‘Stonewall Inn Riots,’ and many many more events.

Every color in the flag has significant meaning. Red refers to life, orange refers to healing, yellow to sunlight, green to nature, blue to serenity, and purple to spirit.

So celebrate pride month and get yourself a beautiful (and quite colorful) pride flag!
