Starbucks Takes a Big Step in Helping the Deaf Community

In October, Starbucks will be opening its first signing store where all employees will be fluent in sign language. The new store will be in Washington DC and will be located close to Gallaudet University, which is a private school for the deaf and hard of hearing. The Starbucks employees will also have specially designed aprons that have “Starbucks” written out in sign language above the letters, pins that read “I sign,” with Starbucks stores including artwork, created by a deaf artist, featured around the store.

This new store will employ those who are fluent in ASL as well as those who are deaf or hard of hearing. It certainly is a big step that Starbucks is taking to attract a more diverse group of people to their stores. Not only will this new store give people in the deaf community an opportunity to work, but it’ll also make going out and ordering a cup of coffee much more comfortable for them. Hopefully, this signing-only location will be the first of many stores across the world.
