Though Fluent In Spanish, Employee Discriminates Against Customer

A man from El Salvador has said that he has received threats from a Walmart employee after he recently shared a video of her telling him to speak English as he was in the United States.

Joel Aparico, a father of two who lives in Texas, encountered problems with a self-checkout. Then a member of staff named Cecilia approaches him to help navigate the system. He asked her if she could speak Spanish, to which she replied “no.”

She fixed the machine for him and left, before it broke down once again meaning she had to return for a second time to fix the machine. This time she proved that her first statement to be a lie, when she spoke fluent Spanish according to Aparico. He says that directly translated she said to him that he shouldn’t be living in America if he can’t speak the language.

The man had every right to be taken aback by the employees attitude, it’s the last way you expect to be spoken to when shopping in your local supermarket. Added to this, the fact that the city of Pasadena has an 65% Hispanic population, so Spanish is a massively popular language in the area.

In the video recorded, he is heard asking whether “It is obligatory to speak English then?” She responded simply by saying: “Yes, because we are in Texas. I live in Texas so I speak English.”

Since uploading the video, Aparico has received a lot of praise and support, however he has also received death threats from people claiming to be a relative of the female Walmart employee.

The police have been contacted after Joel received these threats. While Walmart also released a statement acknowledging that the company was aware of the events and was dealing with it internally.
