The World Series stage is set. Yesterday, the 19th, The Boston Red Sox pulled off a win against the Detroit Tigers to end the ALCS with a 4-2 record. The Red Sox advanced to the World Series, where they will face the St. Louis Cardinals.
It almost looked like Red Sox would not be able to beat the Tigers. In the 7th Inning, the Tigers were up 2-1. The Sox weren’t getting any runs in. But then in top of the 8th they had as breakthrough. Its name was Shane Victorino. With the bases loaded, Victorino got a powerful hit off to left field that ended up being a homerun. The Grand Slam put the Sox up 5-2.
Prior to that, the game was scoreless until the 5th inning. Pitchers for both teams were playing well; Clay Bucholz pitched the first 6 innings for Boston, and Max Scherzer the first 7 innings for Tigers. In the bottom of the 5th, Xander Bogaerts hit a nice double, the first hit since the 3rd inning that eventually allowed him to score off a hit from Jacoby Ellsbury. But in the 6th, The Tigers came back to score 2 runs. Victor Martinez got a hit that went deep into left center, allowing Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera to score.
Craig Breslow kept Detroit from trying to come back in the 8th inning. And on the Tigers side, Al Alburquerque relived Phil Coke as pitcher, striking out the first three batters to keep the score the same. But in the top of the 9th, series MVP Koji Uehera closed out the game with no runs in, and the Boston Red Sox were on their way to the World Series. The win against the Tigers marked the Sox’s 13th AL pennant.
Last Friday, The Cardinals beat the Dodgers 9-0 to take the National League Title in Game 6. They were helped in their big win by Carlos Beltran, who scored 1 run and brought in two others. 22 year old Michael Wacha played a great game for the Cardinals, pitching 7 innings with only 2 hits off him, and 5 strikeouts.
This will be the first World Series since 1999 where the two best teams in each league will be facing off. Astoundingly, both teams had winning 97-65 regular season records. The Red Sox and Cardinals last faced off in the World Series in 2004. Then, the Sox swept the Cardinals to win that Series 4-0. But that was then. Now, I think we are definitely in for a more competitive series where anything could happen.
The first game of the World Series will be at 8:07pmET on Wednesday, October 23. The Red Sox will be hosting at Fenway Park.
